Summer Sgoth Sailing

10 Jul 2026

by Netty Sopata

Over the past two weeks the summer ‘Plòigh’ children’s activities, organised this year by Spòrsnis and supported by Urras Oighreachd Ghabhsainn (UOG), have, for the first time, included Sgoth Sailing sessions in Stornoway. Delivered by Falmadair – The North Lewis Maritime Trust, these sessions have proven so popular that the sailing crew agreed to run an additional round in the second week of Plòigh.

Falmadair – The North Lewis Maritime Trust — was originally set up in the late 1970s to work with Comunn Eachdraidh Nis to look after ‘Jubilee’ the last of the working Sgoth Niseach built by John Finlay Macleod.   Nearly fifty years later, with the support of private donations, membership fees, securing funding awards and with financial support from UOG, Falmadair (Tiller) are now the proud and hard-working volunteer custodians of five Sgoths: Jubilee, An Sulaire, Broadbay, Callicvol and most recently, Oigh Niseach.
